UNION WEEK WITHOUT A UNION SPIRIT

In the Islamic Republic, the week between 12-17 Rabi-ol-avval is known
as the Union Week. Ayatollah Montazari, who was the successor of the
Vali-ye-faghih, designated this week in the early years of the
revolution in order to establish a union between the Sunnites and
Shiites. Ayatollah Montazari, known to be a high-ranked faghih of the
Shiites, took this decision because he believed in union. However, today
nothing has remained from this Shiite-Sunnite union in the hands of the
Vali-ye-faghih regime than a name and a game.

At present, the government is organizing sectional ceremonies and
speeches on the occasion of the Union Week especially in the regions
where the Sunnites and Shiites are living together. Competitions are
held between the Sunnite and Shiite youth. However, the only thing that
does not appear is - unfortunately - the spirit of union.

As a matter of fact, is it possible to create union between two
religious sects just by naming one week as the Union Week? Is it
possible to establish an actual union between different religious sects
just by talking about union? In other words, is it possible to sweeten
your mouth just by thinking about sugar?  Is it not ridiculous to talk
about union in such a country where Sunnites are seen as second-class
citizens, are not appointed to important positions, cannot become a
governor or minister, cannot even dream of becoming a president, cannot
work as public servants, and perceive that they are unhappy due to the
state administration?

Union and national order can be achieved by justice and equality. This
is a country where there is injustice, oppression and discrimination;
where the Sunnites cannot freely express their own ideas in press; where
young people such as Yaghub Mehr Nehad are executed to death only
because of their beliefs; and where the opposing group is blaming their
sacred values in an unjust environment. Is is possible then to talk
about union and the Union Week?

It is regretful that in the Republic of the Vali-ye-faghih the approach
of union as well as the other revolutionary approaches of the regime
have lost their values and have no meaning and essence anymore.

If union means that the Sunnites become irresolute slaves of the mollahs
in the government, if it means to remain silent towards all kind of
discrimination, injustice and entangling restrictions, if it means that
Sunnite madrasas get under the control of the mollahs in the government;
then the Sunnites shall not accept this union and the Union Week in even
thousand years.

The Shiite Republic of Iran has not done anything to get the Sunnites
and Shiites closer. In contrary, this Republic has divided the people
into classes of religious sects although they did not use to have any
sensitivity on religious sects prior to the revolution. They have played
with the feelings of the ordinary people by means of the propaganda made
from the pulpit as a result of which they have distanced the people from
each other and seeded sectional enmity and bigotry.

Consequently, the Union Week in the Shiite Republic does not have the
slightest contribution to the union of the people. Contrarily, this
situation is hurting the Sunnites and refreshing the pain they suffer
due to discrimination and injustice. Presently, the Sunnites (with the
exception of a few mollahs in the government) are observing these
practices with a mocking smile. The raffish ministers of the
Vali-ye-faghih Republic should know that this week with its ostensive
name has no value and credit in the eyes of the Turkmensahra people!
